IS JESUS YOUR LORD?
The
term, “Lord” is unique in meaning, yet used in a casual manner. Think of the
many ways in which the word is used. The expression, “Oh, Lord” for instance,
when there is a mis-hap. Little do people realized that this is using God’s name
in vain, for the reference is to Jesus. Also, prayers are often addressed to
God by the expression, “Dear Lord”. Now in this situation the use of “Lord” may
be quite proper if spoken by a Spirit filled Christian for the right purpose.
These observations may leave you with some question as to what is meant here.
Let us consider some Bible truths to clarify this matter.
To
begin, we should first define what “Lord” means. According to the Winston
dictionary, it means one supreme in authority; sovereign; ruler; governor; and
other lesser positions. Where the word refers to Jesus Christ or Jehovah, God,
these definitions even fall short of who God really is in all truth. He is
incomparable in power, creation; knowledge and love. Man may try to find a substitute
for Him, but will destroy themselves in the process if they do not repent and
bow before Him as the eternal, Father, God. Eventually all creation will bow to
Him, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10-11 AV). Jesus Christ is Lord of all, not only for the moment, but
from alpha to omega.
It
takes more than the human, fleshy tongue to meaningfully express verbally the
Lordship of Christ or His Father; it takes the indwelling Holy Ghost of God to
properly proclaim Him as Lord. This is borne out by God’s Word in 1Cor. 12:3, “Wherefore
I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth
Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the
Holy Ghost.” Also, there is the account that Jesus gives of those who
say, Lord, Lord, without obeying Him, “Not every one that saith unto me,
Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will
of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21 AV)
How can a
person expect to receive anything from God if they do not obey Him? How can a
person obey God without the power of His Spirit living in him? He/she cannot;
it’s that simple. That is why Jesus provides us with the Holy Ghost, His power
for living and loving as He directs. In John 14:25-26 Jesus tells us of the power
and purpose of the Holy Ghost in our lives; “These things have I spoken unto
you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost,
whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring
all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:25-26
AV).
As the Holy
Ghost teaches us and we obey Him, we can then, and not before, call Jesus,
“Lord”. What a privilege it is, and what a comfort to know that Jesus truly is
our Lord, our Master, Savior and friend, and to know that He holds the keys to
Heaven and Hell.
What
do we hear Him telling us? “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy
Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem,
and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
(Acts 1:8 AV) He tells us to be witnesses to Him where ever we are and
preach the Gospel in any way we can so that His saving power can be made known
to all who will hear. As we do this in the Spirit, we can truthfully call
Jesus, “Lord“, but not before.
Can
you truthfully call Jesus, Lord? If not, you need to repent of your sin-laden
life, accept Christ for your salvation, determine to be His servant until He
comes, and ask Him to baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire for power to do
His will: “John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with
water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not
worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
(Luke 3:16 AV) Here is the key to the Lordship of Christ in our lives. We
hope you will find the Lord as we have, and are able to call Him, “Lord”.
